UK Vape Law Rollout: Retailer Rules Starting in Late 2026

The UK’s Tobacco and Vapes Act 2026 became law in April, with several measures taking effect in stages. From 29 October 2026, retailers must prevent sales of vaping and nicotine products to under-18s, limit certain promotions, and stop vending-machine sales. A generational tobacco ban is scheduled for 1 January 2027, covering people born on or after 1 January 2009.
The Act gained Royal Assent on 29 April 2026, with obligations arriving in phases rather than all at once. Retailers, wholesalers, manufacturers and online sellers must track commencement dates, guidance and any jurisdiction-specific enforcement details.
From 29 October 2026, age checks, promotion limits and the vending-machine ban are due. A separate tobacco restriction starts 1 January 2027 for people born on or after 1 January 2009, while a broad advertising and sponsorship ban is intended for 1 June 2027.
The staged rules could reshape how younger consumers encounter nicotine and tobacco products, while retailers and online sellers may face added verification and compliance burdens. Staff training, promotion controls and vending restrictions could affect small shops and venues, and the later advertising ban may alter how vape brands reach audiences. Because enforcement and penalties may vary by jurisdiction, public awareness and consistent guidance could influence how smoothly the changes take effect.
