RAYE Earns 2026 Mercury Prize for Sophomore Album

RAYE won the 2026 Mercury Prize for her second album, This Music May Contain Hope, at a ceremony in Newcastle on Oct. 22. It is her first Mercury Prize win, and she is the first female solo artist to take the honor since Little Simz in 2022. The shortlist included Olivia Dean, Paul McCartney, Florence + The Machine, and other acts.
RAYE’s victory came at Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Thursday, Oct. 22, for her second album, This Music May Contain Hope. She had previously been shortlisted for 2023’s My 21st Century Blues. The award was last taken by a solo woman in 2022, when Little Simz won with Sometimes I Might Be an Introvert.
The 12-act shortlist also featured Olivia Dean, Paul McCartney—nominated for the first time—Dave, Florence + The Machine, Dove Ellis, JADE, Knats, Kojey Radical, Nia Archives, Suede and a War Child compilation. Everyone except Dave and McCartney performed at the ceremony, hosted by Lauren Laverne, with Sian Eleri announcing the winner.
RAYE’s win may strengthen visibility for British and Irish solo artists who write from personal experience, and could encourage listeners and industry figures to revisit her earlier nominated work. For fans, the result offers a talking point about how genre-spanning albums are recognized; for emerging acts, the shortlist’s mix of established and newer names may signal that the prize can still spotlight varied careers. Its social effect is likely modest, but it could influence streaming interest and live demand around the winner and shortlisted artists.
