Future iPhone Duo may add hidden Face ID, report says

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on under-display Face ID for later iPhone Duo models. Prototypes of the second-generation device reportedly include an under-screen sensor and camera on the outer display. The current iPhone Duo relies only on Touch ID, and the fix may take two to three years to reach production.
The first iPhone Duo arrives tomorrow after strong preorder demand, with online orders delayed into January and only limited launch-day stock expected in stores. Early reviews praise the foldable overall but flag app compatibility, missing telephoto capability, and battery concerns.
The most cited drawback is authentication: the Duo uses Touch ID only because combining two screens with TrueDepth proved difficult. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says Apple is developing under-display Face ID, with Duo 2 prototypes placing a sensor and camera beneath the outer screen. He expects a production fix in roughly two to three years.
For consumers, under-display Face ID could make foldables more convenient, especially for people wearing gloves or holding drinks, and may influence how quickly they embrace the category. Developers and accessory makers may need to adapt as authentication and screen layouts change. Privacy and security expectations could also shape adoption, since biometrics remain sensitive. The effect is likely gradual: the current Duo’s limited supply means many people may encounter these changes through reviews and later models rather than immediately.
