Diane von Furstenberg received the Museum at FIT’s 2026 Couture Council Award at a Thursday luncheon held at Gotham Hall. The museum honored her long-term effect on women’s clothing, and the room included Martha Stewart, Narciso Rodriguez, LaQuan Smith, Nicole Miller and other fashion figures.
Henry Zankov, DVF’s artistic director and an FIT graduate, opened the program. He described the event as a return to his roots, compared design work to architecture, and noted that his first DVF collection appeared at the High Line in September. FIT president Jason S. Schupbach also addressed the community’s recent distress after a federal case reopened a campus tragedy.
The honor may strengthen public attention on von Furstenberg’s design legacy and on the Museum at FIT’s role in fashion education. Students and emerging designers could see increased visibility for FIT’s alumni and mentorship networks, while audiences may revisit how women’s fashion reflects independence and self-presentation. The event’s mention of campus safety concerns may also prompt institutions to consider how public celebrations and community accountability coexist.
