Lagos Court Issues Asset Order in UBA Fuel-Cargo Suit

A Lagos High Court granted United Bank for Africa an asset order in a dispute over a N242 million, or about $183,000, fuel cargo involving Vitol SA and four shipping companies. UBA says it never received the gasoil cargo it financed. The order protects assets until the court hears the full claims, and the case is not decided.
The order concerns a N242 million gasoil shipment UBA financed but says it never received. It was granted under Lagos High Court provisions cited as Order 43 Rule 1 and Practice Direction No. 2 of 2019. TheCable reported the ruling on 22 October 2026 and said it applied only to the second respondent, unnamed in its report.
UBA says it issued a letter of credit for Vitol SA, which allegedly endorsed shipping documents to the bank, giving it a claim to the cargo after the voyage. The suit raises conversion, misrepresentation and negligence claims. The order preserves assets while the case proceeds. The sum is small beside UBA’s reported 2025 profit of N404.7 billion.
The dispute may matter most to UBA’s shareholders, trade-finance clients and shipping counterparties, because it tests how quickly banks can protect assets tied to financed cargo. Given the sum is modest against UBA’s reported profit, any direct earnings effect could be limited. Still, the ruling may shape confidence in Lagos courts’ handling of commercial claims, potentially affecting how traders and lenders structure future fuel-financing deals.
