Pat McAfee Breaks Into Acting With Drill Instructor Role in ‘The Mosquito Bowl’

Pat McAfee, known for ESPN and College GameDay, makes his film debut as a Marine drill instructor in Peter Berg's The Mosquito Bowl. He said a 2024 College GameDay visit by Timothée Chalamet brought Hollywood attention just as the film was casting. McAfee prepared at Parris Island and had not seen the finished movie before its AFI Fest premiere.
McAfee, an ESPN personality and College GameDay analyst, steps into his first film role in Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl. The Netflix drama centers on four standout college football players who enlist in the Marines after Pearl Harbor and play a historic game before deployment. McAfee plays a Marine drill instructor opposite Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgard, Ray Nicholson and Tom Francis.
He spent a week training at South Carolina’s Parris Island recruit depot. A 2024 College GameDay appearance by Timothée Chalamet coincided with casting and drew Hollywood interest. McAfee had not viewed the completed film before its AFI Fest premiere; Berg said he sought acting advice from Bradley Cooper and Tom Cruise.
McAfee’s crossover could draw sports viewers to a historical war drama and may give his ESPN/GameDay audience a new way to see him. It may also encourage producers to cast broadcast personalities in military roles, though the film’s reception will shape whether such moves are seen as novelty or credible acting. Veterans and military families may watch closely for how drill instructors and Marine training are portrayed.
