U.S. PMIs Signal Strong Growth and Persistent Inflation

The October flash PMI data showed U.S. manufacturing growing at its fastest rate since May 2022 and services activity at its second-highest level in nearly five years. The readings indicate strong economic expansion together with significant inflation pressure.
The October flash purchasing managers’ index survey put U.S. manufacturing at 56.0, its strongest reading since May 2022. The services business activity index reached 57.9, second only to September among the past five years’ highs.
Together, the readings point to accelerating output at the beginning of Q4, with survey results described as consistent with GDP growth. The same data also show notable price pressures, suggesting expansion is accompanied by inflation.
For households and businesses, persistent inflation alongside strong growth could mean higher borrowing costs for longer, affecting mortgages, credit cards, and corporate investment. Equity investors may weigh robust activity against pressure on margins and valuations, while workers could see stronger hiring but also less purchasing power if prices keep rising. The net effect may vary by income and debt exposure.
