Laura Owens Gets Jail Time in Clayton Echard Pregnancy Hoax Case

A Scottsdale woman was given 30 days in jail and seven years of supervised probation after admitting to four felony charges tied to a false twin-pregnancy claim against former Bachelor lead Clayton Echard. Echard told the court that prison was necessary and described her as unlikely to stop. If she breaks probation, she could face more than 15 years behind bars.
Owens, 36, of Scottsdale, Arizona, pleaded guilty in August to four felonies: two fraud-related counts, an identity-theft count and perjury. The case involved a fabricated twin pregnancy involving former Bachelor lead Clayton Echard, including an altered ultrasound and medical records. On Oct. 23, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Rueter gave her 30 days in jail and seven years of supervised probation.
At the hearing, Echard said jail was essential and predicted Owens would continue from her parents’ guest house. The judge called her conduct either calculated exploitation or attention-seeking linked to mental-health issues. Owens apologized; statements from Greg Gillespie and the woman whose ultrasound was used were presented. A probation violation could bring over 15 years in prison.
The case may reinforce concerns about how easily reproductive images and personal records can be misused online, potentially affecting people who share medical information and those falsely accused. It could also shape public discussion of accountability, mental health and online attention-seeking, while offering some validation to victims. For entertainment audiences, the sentence may signal that celebrity-adjacent deception can carry serious legal consequences, though its broader deterrent effect remains uncertain.
