Canva Debuts Craft AI Image Generator for SMBs
Canva introduced Craft, its first dedicated image-generation model from Canva Research, which produces high-resolution visuals with editing controls. The model uses a two-stage process to plan an image’s composition before rendering it and supports more than 30 aspect ratios and multiple languages. Canva positions the tool as a way for small businesses to create marketing, social media, and presentation visuals more efficiently.
Canva Research has released Craft, the company’s first image-generation model built specifically for its design platform. It creates 2K visuals and was rated second on DesignArena’s crowdsourced leaderboard, with particular strength in portraits, nature scenes, and several other categories.
The system first maps out an image’s structure, then renders the final visual, giving users more control over layout and typography. It handles over 30 aspect ratios and accepts prompts in several languages. Access is available through Canva’s Dream Lab and a public API for developers.
Tools like Craft could let small businesses and solo entrepreneurs produce polished visuals faster and at lower cost, potentially widening access to professional-looking marketing. Designers and marketers may shift toward editing and oversight rather than initial creation, while developers could build custom applications through the API. Audiences may see more AI-made imagery, raising questions about authenticity and cultural fit. Some owners may need training to use the controls effectively, and reliance on generated content could require careful review before publication.
