Buttigieg Backs Montana Independent in Senate Race

Pete Buttigieg endorsed independent Seth Bodnar in Montana’s U.S. Senate race instead of Democratic candidate Alani Bankhead. Buttigieg cited Bodnar’s military background and willingness to work across party lines, while Bodnar also faces Republican Kurt Alme. Some Montana Democrats see Bodnar as a stronger general-election candidate in a state that has historically leaned Republican.
Buttigieg, a former transportation secretary and possible 2028 presidential contender, announced his support for Seth Bodnar in a Friday video on X. Bodnar, 47, served as an Army Green Beret and led a patrol in Iraq in 2008; Buttigieg served in Afghanistan with the Navy Reserve.
Bodnar is competing against Republican Kurt Alme and Democrat Alani Bankhead. Some Montana Democrats view him as more viable in a state that has usually favored Republicans. Bankhead told PBS the DNC offered her a committee job if she withdrew; the DNC denied that account. Buttigieg will campaign in seven states before the midterms.
Buttigieg’s endorsement could shape how Montana voters weigh party affiliation against military experience and cross-party appeal in a Republican-leaning state. It may intensify debate among Democrats about backing independents, affecting activists, donors, and voters who see such moves as pragmatic or risky. The outcome may also influence how national figures approach future Senate races, though its effect on the general election remains uncertain.
