Semtech adds network slicing and security features to AirLink 5G for first responders

Semtech is expanding its AirLink 5G networking products with network slicing, FIPS 140-3 security compliance, and fleet-management tools aimed at public safety agencies. The company will show the capabilities at the IACP conference in Orlando, and its XR60, XR80, and XR90 in-vehicle routers support the new features. Semtech said the additions are meant to give first responders prioritized, secure connectivity when commercial networks are congested.
Semtech’s AirLink XR60, XR80 and XR90 vehicle routers will gain network-slicing support and fleet-management controls. The routers are already designated FirstNet Trusted and certified for T-Mobile T-Priority and Verizon Frontline slices, according to the company. Semtech plans to show these capabilities at IACP in Orlando, booth 2964.
AirLink OS 6.1 lets compatible routers meet FIPS 140-3 via software, avoiding hardware swaps. The update follows NIST’s move of FIPS 140-2 certificates to its Historical List on Sept. 21, 2026. New management groups can set device-model standards, check fleet compliance and fix misconfigured units; version 2.18.1 adds cloud, on-premises and air-gapped options.
Public safety agencies and the communities they serve could benefit if prioritized slices and stronger cryptographic compliance reduce congestion-related failures during emergencies. First responders may gain more reliable dispatch, video and data access, while administrators could enforce consistent device settings across fleets. However, benefits depend on carrier slice availability, agency adoption and operational configuration; the announcement alone does not guarantee improved outcomes.
