AMC Says Kips Bay Cinema Closure Is Out of Its Hands

AMC CEO Adam Aron wrote to New Yorkers about the Kips Bay 15 multiplex, saying the chain hopes to keep it open. He noted that AMC does not control the decision, and a closing date has been announced. The property was bought last year by NYU Langone.
Adam Aron addressed New Yorkers in a public message about the Kips Bay 15, saying AMC wants to keep running the Manhattan theater. He made clear, however, that the chain cannot determine whether it stays open.
The cinema has served the Kips Bay–Murray Hill area near Second Avenue and the East River since 1999 and became an AMC site in 2006. Local residents have spoken out about its scheduled shutdown. NYU Langone, a large local health system, bought the underlying property last year.
The closure could affect moviegoers in Kips Bay and Murray Hill who rely on a nearby multiplex, as well as local businesses that may benefit from theater traffic. It may also alter the area’s evening and weekend activity, and NYU Langone’s ownership could signal a shift in how the site serves the neighborhood. The outcome may matter to residents who value convenient cultural amenities, though broader effects are uncertain.
