SEC Adds AI and Tokenization to 2027 Exam Priorities

The SEC has included advanced AI and tokenized securities in its fiscal 2027 examination priorities. Examiners will review how more than 34,000 registered firms use AI in trading, compliance, fraud prevention and customer service. They will also assess risks from tokenized securities and related market infrastructure changes.
The SEC’s examinations division added advanced AI and tokenized securities to its FY2027 review agenda, announced Oct. 23. The scope covers over 34,000 registered entities, including advisers, broker-dealers, clearing agencies and transfer agents. Examiners will assess AI use in trading, compliance, fraud detection and customer support, plus defenses against synthetic phishing, cloned voices and altered video.
For tokenization, reviews will examine clearing agencies’ operational-risk controls, recordkeeping, system reliability and securities-law compliance under Reg SCI. The agenda also covers extended trading hours, quantum computing and transfer agents’ new-technology use for ownership records. Crypto has no standalone category; tokenization falls under market-infrastructure oversight, and the document adds no rules or asset classifications.
The expanded reviews could affect investors, registered firms and market operators by prompting stronger AI governance, testing and recordkeeping. Firms may face more scrutiny of automated advice and fraud controls, which could improve safeguards but also raise compliance costs. Tokenization oversight may shape how blockchain-based securities are handled, affecting issuers, transfer agents and clearing services. Broader public trust in markets may depend on whether these reviews clarify risks without stifling useful innovation.
