Kalshi Prepares Inflation Futures for Institutional Traders

Kalshi is aiming to launch futures tied to US consumer price inflation in December 2026. The prediction market operator is courting banks, hedge funds and asset managers for contracts tracking headline and core CPI. Former Barclays trader Michael Ashton is helping develop the products and attract institutional interest.
Kalshi's planned CPI contracts would cover the next 12 monthly reporting periods, followed by May and November contracts extending four more years. Continuous trading would run from Sunday to Friday, with Kalshi Klear LLC handling clearing. The products would track both headline and core CPI, offering institutions standardized exchange-traded contracts instead of bespoke swap agreements.
The venture would place Kalshi alongside CME Group and Intercontinental Exchange. CME introduced US CPI futures in 2004 but later stopped offering them, and prior attempts had trouble drawing steady volume. Existing US inflation exposure includes roughly $2.2 trillion in TIPS and more than $5.4 trillion in inflation swaps.
If these contracts gain liquidity, they could give pension funds, asset managers and other institutions another way to hedge or express views on inflation, potentially influencing how quickly price-risk is priced into portfolios. Retail consumers may be affected indirectly through financial products and market expectations, though the immediate participants are likely professional traders. A successful launch may also sharpen attention on CPI releases, while weak uptake would leave the existing swaps and TIPS market dominant.
