Silent Hill Artist Masahiro Ito Claps Back at Madonna Fans Over Music Video Comments
Silent Hill creature designer Masahiro Ito has responded to criticism from Madonna fans after his remarks about a Madonna music video being an inspiration sparked backlash. Ito defended his comments on social media.
Ito's 2019 reference to the 1999 music video specifically pointed to the white-painted Asian dancers performing Butoh choreography, which shaped the movements of the Lying Figure and Bubble Head Nurses. His 2026 clarification stressed that the dancers' motions, not Madonna's song or persona, were the sole source of that influence.
Following that clarification, Ito faced sustained online harassment, prompting him to post screenshots of abusive messages in August. He characterized one critic as a typical stan who plays victim after being blocked, a tactic he shares with fellow developer Hideki Kamiya.
This clash illustrates how specific technical acknowledgments can be misread by passionate fanbases as dismissals. Creators may become hesitant to cite niche visual influences if they risk prolonged harassment from misinterpretation. Conversely, it could encourage clearer communication about artistic borrowing, potentially reducing friction between different entertainment communities.
