Call of Duty Beta to Include Story Mission for First Time, Xbox Announces
Xbox has revealed that the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 beta will include a single-player campaign mission, a first for the series' pre-release tests. The beta is scheduled for later this month. This marks a new approach to letting players experience the narrative before launch.
The beta's first weekend, August 21–25, is restricted to pre-order customers on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The second open beta, August 28–September 1, adds Nintendo Switch 2 access and introduces the Zodiac Warzone Resurgence map. Multiplayer map rotation shifts between weekends, with Lotus replaced by Lithium. The full game launches October 23, 2026.
This marks a notable departure from prior Call of Duty betas, which exclusively showcased multiplayer. The inclusion of "Entrenched" suggests a strategic effort to spotlight narrative content ahead of release, potentially appealing to players who prioritize story over competitive modes.
This move could reshape pre-release marketing for major shooters, as studios may see value in showcasing narrative hooks to drive early purchases. Players who typically skip betas might now engage, influencing day-one reception. However, it may also raise expectations for campaign quality, and any technical issues in the mission could amplify criticism. The impact likely remains within gaming culture, but it signals a broader trend toward integrating story elements into promotional cycles.
