Nothing OS 5.0 Introduces Adaptive Colors and a New Glyph App
Nothing OS 5.0, based on Android 17, adds adaptive color theming that lets app icons and widgets match the wallpaper while preserving the monochrome aesthetic. The update also includes a new Glyph Interface app and additional homescreen customization options. It launches in open beta on August 26th for the Nothing Phone 3, with a broader rollout planned, but older models like the Phone 1 and Phone 2 will not receive it.
The update's adaptive color system works alongside Android's native Dynamic Colors, letting users selectively tint icons and widgets while retaining Nothing's signature monochrome base. This is positioned as an optional theme rather than a forced redesign. Beyond visual changes, the OS introduces practical tools like the Away Time widget for tracking phone-free periods and a Collector widget that converts photographed items into homescreen shortcuts.
The rollout strategy is notably staggered, with the Phone 3 receiving the open beta first on August 26th, followed by most other models by January 2027. However, the Phone 1, Phone 2, and CMF Phone 1 are excluded entirely, meaning a significant portion of Nothing's existing user base will miss out on Android 17 features like enhanced quick share and 3D emojis.
This update may widen the gap between newer and older Nothing device owners, potentially influencing upgrade decisions among existing users who feel left behind. The adaptive color theming could appeal to users seeking personalization without abandoning minimalist aesthetics, possibly setting a trend for other Android manufacturers to offer similar hybrid theming options. However, the exclusion of older models may frustrate budget-conscious consumers and could affect brand loyalty, particularly among CMF Phone users who expected longer software support for their devices.
