State of Decay 3 Closed Beta Announced for Later This Year

Undead Labs has confirmed a closed beta for State of Decay 3 before the end of 2026, with sign-ups now open. The studio says an earlier alpha helped improve combat, cosmetics, visuals, and movement. The game is planned for release in 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
The closed beta follows an earlier alpha phase that Undead Labs says yielded meaningful improvements across several systems, including combat mechanics, character customization, visual fidelity, and player movement. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt emphasized that the game features the studio's largest map to date alongside untethered multiplayer, which requires extensive stress-testing. He indicated that access will roll out gradually, with additional opportunities planned throughout the year for both series veterans and newcomers.
State of Decay 3's development history stretches back to its initial announcement at the Xbox Series X/S reveal in 2020, followed by a quiet period and a 2024 re-reveal. The project now targets a 2027 launch across Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Notably, Undead Labs is currently transitioning away from Xbox following the platform's recent restructuring, though the beta announcement still references a Game Pass release, leaving the game's subscription status uncertain.
This beta announcement could signal a turning point for a franchise that has been largely dormant since its 2020 reveal. For players, the extended testing window may offer early insight into whether the game's ambitious untethered multiplayer and larger map deliver on years of anticipation. The studio's uncertain relationship with Xbox could also affect how accessible the final product becomes, potentially influencing player purchasing decisions and subscription choices in an increasingly competitive market.
