Chinese rocket's debut landing attempt ends in fireball, but second flight succeeds

Newly released footage shows LandSpace's Zhuque-3 rocket exploding during its first landing attempt in December 2025. The booster suffered a mid-descent explosion and crashed near the landing pad. The company's second mission, on Aug. 18, 2026, successfully delivered a satellite to orbit and landed the first stage, marking the first successful touchdown by a private Chinese rocket.
The Zhuque-3's December 2025 debut demonstrated the technical difficulty of vertical landing recovery. Footage from the booster's onboard camera showed the vehicle using grid fins for attitude control during descent, a design approach similar to SpaceX's Falcon 9. The stage suffered an internal explosion mid-descent and was already burning when it struck the ground near the pad.
LandSpace's successful August 2026 flight marked a significant milestone for China's commercial space sector. The 66-meter rocket delivered a satellite to orbit and recovered its first stage, making it the first private Chinese company to achieve this feat. A Chinese state rocket, the Long March 10B, had previously landed on a ship-borne net apparatus in July 2026.
This achievement could accelerate competition in the global commercial launch market, as reusable rockets lower the cost of accessing space. Chinese private launch providers may gain credibility with international customers seeking alternatives to established players. The successful recovery could also influence how China's space industry develops, potentially encouraging more domestic companies to pursue similar technologies. However, the earlier failure shows the technical risks remain significant, and the long-term economic benefits will depend on whether LandSpace can demonstrate reliable, repeated reuse rather than a single success.
