Gemini 5's eight-day mission set U.S. spaceflight endurance record in 1965

On Aug. 29, 1965, astronauts Gordon Cooper and Pete Conrad returned from Gemini 5, having spent eight days in orbit—a new U.S. record. An electrical problem forced cancellation of planned rendezvous tests and some experiments. Conrad later described the cramped spacecraft as 'eight days in a garbage can.'
The mission launched from Florida atop a Titan II rocket, with Cooper commanding and Conrad piloting. A fuel cell oxygen tank pressure problem forced cancellation of the planned rendezvous demonstration and several experiments, though the crew still completed the full eight-day duration. The backup crew consisted of Neil Armstrong and Elliott See, both rookies at the time.
NASA's previous longest flight had lasted only four days, so Gemini 5 served as a critical endurance test for the Apollo program's planned lunar round trips. Cooper designed the mission patch himself, featuring a Conestoga wagon and the motto "8 Days Or Bust." The flight demonstrated that astronauts could function in cramped quarters for extended periods, paving the way for longer missions ahead.
