North Korea replaces defence minister in military shake-up
North Korea's defence minister No Kwang-chol has been dismissed and demoted in a military leadership reshuffle led by Kim Jong-un. Kim Song-gi, director of the General Political Bureau, was appointed as the new defence minister. The reshuffle also included promotions for other senior officials.
The reshuffle, announced via state media, follows a Saturday meeting chaired by Kim Jong-un that focused on “structural reorganisation plans” for the military. No Kwang-chol’s demotion to first vice-director of the Munitions Industry Department places him in a logistics-focused role, while his successor, Kim Song-gi, previously led the army’s General Political Bureau, a key ideological oversight position. The meeting also elevated defence adviser Pak Jong-chon to vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and the ruling party’s Political Bureau, alongside several other promotions. In a separate KCNA report, Kim honoured scientists and researchers for defence technology advances, suggesting the shake-up aligns with ongoing weapons development priorities.
