Rocket Lab prepares to send Synspective's radar satellite into orbit

Rocket Lab is scheduled to launch a Strix radar satellite for the Japanese company Synspective from its New Zealand site on September 1. The Electron rocket will lift off during a window opening at 7:30 a.m. EDT. The satellite is part of a planned constellation of about 30 spacecraft for all-weather, day-and-night Earth observation.
The Strix spacecraft employs synthetic aperture radar, a technology that penetrates cloud cover and darkness, enabling consistent ground monitoring regardless of weather or time of day. Synspective intends to deploy roughly 30 such satellites, with disaster response — including earthquake and flood assessment — cited as a primary application alongside resource management and urban planning.
This launch marks the 12th Electron flight of 2026 and the 85th overall for Rocket Lab, which remains Synspective's exclusive launch provider. Ten Strix satellites have already reached orbit aboard Electron vehicles, with 16 additional missions contracted beyond Tuesday's flight. The satellite will separate from the kick stage about 56 minutes after liftoff at an altitude of roughly 575 kilometers.
Radar-imaging constellations like Synspective's could significantly improve disaster response timelines, potentially helping emergency services assess damage at night or in storm conditions when optical satellites are blind. The data may also support more efficient land and water management in urban and rural settings. However, expanded commercial Earth observation raises questions about surveillance and data access, as more private actors gain persistent monitoring capabilities that governments and corporations could use in ways that affect privacy and resource competition.
