Nepal's Deadly Glacial Flood Prompts Urgent Calls for Climate Action
Five days after a catastrophic flood in Rasuwa, Nepal, officials report 903 confirmed deaths and over 4,200 missing, with neighboring Tibet also suffering casualties. Experts suspect the disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung, exacerbated by rapid ice loss and a warm spell that lubricated a landslide. Nepali officials and UN climate leaders are urging global action as Himalayan warming outpaces the global average.
The disaster unfolded when a glacier collapse on Langtang Lirung sent ice and rock into the Trishuli River valley, forming a temporary dam that eventually burst, releasing a towering wave of water and mud. The region had lost roughly one-third of its ice over three decades, with the Langtang Lirung glacier retreating about 1,500 feet between 1990 and 2020, leaving slopes increasingly unstable.
A warm spell preceding the flood melted snow that likely lubricated the rockfall, according to researchers. Himalayan peaks are warming at nearly double the global rate, and August represents the region's warmest period. The HiRisk project, which monitors melting ice threats, has flagged such glacial lake outburst floods as an escalating hazard across the mountain range.
This tragedy could signal a broader pattern for mountain communities worldwide, as warming-driven glacial instability may produce more frequent and severe flood events. Vulnerable populations in high-altitude regions, often with limited infrastructure and early-warning systems, may face disproportionate risks.
