Disney+ Live-Action Gargoyles Adaptation Officially Canceled, Creator Confirms
Gargoyles creator Greg Weisman has confirmed that the planned live-action reboot for Disney+ is no longer in development. The project, which was to be produced by James Wan's Atomic Monster with Gary Dauberman attached, has been scrapped. The original 1990s animated series remains available to stream on Disney+.
The live-action project, first announced in 2023, had Gary Dauberman attached as showrunner and writer, with James Wan’s Atomic Monster producing. Dauberman had previously emphasized preserving the original’s dark tone, but creator Greg Weisman’s recent confirmation to ComicsOnline marks the end of that iteration. No animated revival is currently planned, though the full 1994–1996 series remains available on Disney+. The original show, featuring Keith David as Goliath, is often credited with elevating ’90s cartoon storytelling, particularly in its portrayal of villains.
Fans of the cult-classic series may feel disappointment, but the cancellation reflects broader industry caution around adapting beloved animated properties into live-action. Disney+ retains the original as a streaming draw, so nostalgia-driven viewership could still sustain interest. The decision may also signal shifting priorities toward proven franchises, though it leaves room for future animated projects if audience demand resurfaces.
