The wildland-urban interface, where housing meets forests or grasslands, now contains over a third of U.S. homes. Development there has slowed since its 1990s–2010s surge, but housing shortages still push buyers toward cheaper, less-regulated outskirts. Reno’s status as the fastest-warming U.S. city compounds the hazard, while California’s 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires and this year’s Spokane blazes show the pattern repeating across the West. Scientists link record-low snowpack and prolonged heat waves to more frequent, severe burns.
