Sony's ULT Tower speakers gain Auracast wireless linking and live EQ controls
Sony unveiled three new ULT Tower party speakers that support Bluetooth Auracast for wirelessly chaining multiple units, plus XLR, RCA, and USB-C inputs for DJ gear. Each model features four EQ presets, including bass-boost and live modes, and the top-end Tower Max delivers the brand's most powerful bass yet. Prices range from $450 to $1,500, with the larger models offering water resistance and extended battery life.
The three new models replace Sony's existing Tower 10, XV800, and XV500 speakers, with pricing set at $1,500, $650, and $450 respectively. The flagship Tower Max features a rear woofer, four tweeters, and a mid-range driver, while the Tower 7 and Tower 5 both carry IPX4 water resistance ratings. Battery life varies significantly, with the Tower 7 lasting 30 hours per charge versus roughly 20 hours for the smaller Tower 5.
The Party Chain function marks the first time Sony has brought Bluetooth Auracast technology to its speaker lineup, previously limited to headphones. All three units accept XLR, RCA, and USB-C connections, making them compatible with professional DJ equipment and the company's ULT MIC1 microphone for karaoke use. The larger models include upgraded wheels with wider treads for easier transport.
These speakers could reshape how people approach home entertainment and small gatherings, offering wireless multi-room audio that previously required complex wired setups. DJs and event hosts may find the flexible inputs and live EQ controls particularly valuable, potentially reducing their need for separate equipment. However, the Auracast limitation to new models only could frustrate existing Sony owners, and the premium pricing may restrict access to serious hobbyists and professionals rather than casual consumers.
