Range Rover Electric retains familiar styling, boasts 330-mile range
Range Rover's first electric SUV adopts the same exterior design as its gasoline models, avoiding futuristic styling. It features dual 260kW motors, a 118.5 kWh battery, and an estimated 330 miles of range. The 800-volt system allows 10-80% charging in 22 minutes, with 542 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque.
The Range Rover Electric arrives after a lengthy development cycle that began with the company's initial announcement more than five years ago, with preorders first opening in 2023. Production will take place at JLR's Solihull facility alongside traditional gas and hybrid variants, and the company has filed roughly 300 patents related to the vehicle's construction.
Engineering highlights include a traction control system that adjusts motor output in 50 milliseconds, roughly 100 times faster than mechanical systems in combustion vehicles. The sealed battery and motor assembly permits water crossings up to 900mm deep, while the one-pedal driving mode handles gradients as steep as 45 degrees. A heat pump repurposes waste heat for cabin warming and battery temperature management.
This vehicle could signal a shift in how established luxury automakers approach electrification, prioritizing brand continuity over radical redesigns. Buyers who hesitated to adopt EVs may feel more comfortable with familiar styling, potentially accelerating mainstream acceptance. However, its premium pricing limits accessibility, meaning the broader societal impact on emissions reduction may remain modest until more affordable electric SUVs with comparable range and charging speed reach the market.
