BYD's Sealion 08 Launch and Radar Chip Production Signal Push for Growth
BYD introduced the Sealion 08, a large SUV available as a full electric or plug-in hybrid, with prices starting at about $34,000. The electric version claims up to 900 kilometers of range, while the hybrid offers up to 400 kilometers on electric power. The company also began mass producing its own 4D radar chip for advanced driver assistance.
The Sealion 08 expands BYD’s Ocean lineup with eight configurations spanning battery-electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains, seating five or six passengers. The electric variants claim 800–900 kilometers of range, while hybrid versions offer 350–400 kilometers on battery power alone. Pricing ranges from roughly $34,000 to $42,000, undercutting many rivals. The vehicle also features ultra-fast charging—10% to 70% in five minutes—and a 26-inch augmented-reality head-up display.
Separately, BYD’s semiconductor unit has begun mass production of a 28-nanometer 4D millimeter-wave radar chip, designed to improve elevation-angle perception for advanced driver assistance. The chip integrates with BYD’s in-house Xuanji A3 computing platform and supports high-speed data interfaces, aiming to reduce reliance on external suppliers and strengthen vertical integration.
This launch could intensify competition in China’s large-SUV segment, pressuring legacy automakers and startups to match aggressive pricing and range claims. The in-house radar chip may lower component costs and accelerate deployment of semi-autonomous features across BYD’s lineup, potentially making such technology more affordable globally. Consumers could benefit from faster charging and longer range, but adoption depends on charging infrastructure and real-world performance matching marketing figures.
