Philips Hue adds AI-driven lighting automations and Sonos speaker controls
Philips Hue unveiled a new AI-powered feature at IFA that lets users create complex lighting automations through natural language descriptions, expanding beyond simple color changes. The update also integrates Sonos speakers, allowing select Hue switches to control playback, volume, and playlist navigation. Both features will roll out via a software update in November.
The Custom AI Behaviors feature addresses a long-standing limitation of the Hue app, which previously only supported basic time-based automations. Advanced users typically built complex routines through third-party platforms because the app's interface couldn't present the necessary options clearly. The new system leverages the Bridge Pro's processing power, and the underlying automation engine will be opened to third-party developers.
The Sonos integration adds audio control to Hue's physical switches, including the Tap Dial Switch. Users can trigger Favorites, manage playback, adjust volume, and navigate playlists. Both features arrive via a November software update, with Custom AI Behaviors currently in beta testing.
