Lenovo's fanless AeroBlade concept uses solid-state cooling, plus rollable-screen laptop

Lenovo has shown two laptop concepts at IFA: the AeroBlade, which uses Frore Systems' AirJet solid-state cooling instead of fans, and Project Swan, a rollable-screen laptop that expands from 14 to 17 inches. The AeroBlade weighs under 1.83 pounds and is 0.39 inches thick, with a 30W cooling capacity.
The AeroBlade concept relies on four AirJet Mini modules from Frore Systems, each rated to dissipate 7.5 watts, for a combined 30 watts of active cooling. This pairs with Intel Lunar Lake silicon rated between 17 and 30 watts TDP, and the design also incorporates a compact motherboard inside a magnesium-aluminum frame, yielding a 10-millimeter profile and an 830-gram weight. Connectivity is limited to three Thunderbolt 4 ports, alongside an OLED panel and Wi-Fi 7 support.
Project Swan places a 17-inch, 16:9 display with a 2850 x 1672 resolution inside a standard 14-inch ThinkBook chassis. The screen expands at the press of a button, and the whole system weighs roughly 3.5 pounds. This marks Lenovo's continued exploration of rollable displays, following earlier attempts, though this iteration appears more mainstream and closer to a producible design than prior concepts.
This pairing of fanless cooling and rollable screens could reshape expectations for laptop portability and durability. Business travelers and remote workers may benefit from lighter, quieter machines that still deliver sustained performance, while the rollable display offers a larger canvas without added bulk. However, solid-state cooling and moving-screen mechanisms introduce new reliability questions, and early adopters could face higher costs or repair complexity. If these concepts mature, they may push competitors toward similar innovations, potentially accelerating a shift away from traditional fan-based designs across the industry.
