Flemish Broadcaster VRT Boards Historical Drama 'King of Hearts'

VRT has signed on to support the coming-of-age royal series from producer Giles Coulier, whose company previously delivered 'War of the Worlds' and 'Albatros'. The project is still in development and has been picked for the inaugural Euro-Atlantic Co-Pro Pitch at Iberseries & Platino Industria. The move reflects a growing appetite for continental royalty dramas.
The historical coming-of-age royal drama is being developed by De Wereldvrede, the production house behind the 2019 sci-fi series 'War of the Worlds' and the Prix Europa-winning 'Albatros'. VRT's involvement represents a significant early vote of confidence for the project, which has yet to enter production.
'King of Hearts' has also earned a slot in the first-ever Euro-Atlantic Co-Pro Pitch, taking place at the Iberseries & Platino Industria event in Madrid. This selection highlights a broader industry trend where European royal narratives, such as 'Maxima', are achieving strong audience traction and commercial success.
The backing of a major public broadcaster like VRT could signal a renewed appetite for European historical narratives, potentially encouraging other regional networks to invest in similar high-concept royal dramas. This may expand the variety of continental stories available to global streaming audiences, while also strengthening cross-border co-production pipelines. For viewers, it could mean more culturally specific, locally produced content that competes with dominant Anglo-American offerings.
