Huawei's tri-fold Mate XT2 debuts with integrated privacy display
Huawei's Mate XT2 is the first foldable phone with a built-in privacy display, featuring a tri-fold design that opens to a 10.2-inch screen. It runs on the Kirin 9050 Pro chip and includes a quad-camera setup. The device starts at 19,999 yuan (about $2,980) and goes on sale September 12 in China.
The Mate XT2 introduces a new inward-folding hinge, a notable shift from its 2024 predecessor's design. When collapsed, it measures 6.5 inches, but unfolds to a 10.2-inch 3K canvas, operating on Huawei's proprietary HarmonyOS rather than the aspect ratio found in the Pura X.
Storage tiers scale significantly, with all models featuring 16GB of RAM. The base 1TB version with the privacy display costs roughly $3,725, while a 2TB collector's edition reaches about $4,470. Despite these advancements, US availability remains blocked due to ongoing national security restrictions.
The integration of a privacy display into a tri-fold form factor could set a new benchmark for mobile security, potentially prompting competitors to accelerate similar features. However, the steep pricing, starting near $3,000, may limit these benefits to affluent early adopters, leaving mainstream consumers without access to such advanced privacy tools. Additionally, the continued US market exclusion may mean these innovations remain concentrated in Asian and European markets, shaping regional disparities in available consumer technology.
