Apple's A20 Pro debuts as its first 2nm phone processor, powering iPhone 18 Pro models

Apple unveiled the A20 Pro system-on-chip at its iPhone event, marking its first 2-nanometer chip for smartphones. The processor includes a 6-core CPU with two super-cores that are 20% faster than the prior generation, plus a 7-core GPU delivering a 40% performance increase. It also features dual neural engines with 32 total cores and pairs with Apple's new in-house C2 modem.
The new chip's packaging shifts memory away from the thermal path, letting the silicon attach directly to a vapor chamber that is three times larger than the previous generation's. This design, incorporating more graphite and copper alongside recycled stainless steel, supports claims of up to 40% better sustained performance over the iPhone 17 Pro.
Beyond the processor, the A20 Pro pairs with Apple's C2 modem, which delivers faster uploads while using 15% less energy and adds mmWave support in the United States. Battery estimates reach 36 hours of video playback on the Pro and 45 hours on the Pro Max, with a new N1 chip handling Wi-Fi 7.
