Anak Krakatau's Powerful Eruption Observed from Orbit, Disrupting Air Travel

Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in Indonesia, erupted for over 24 hours on September 5-6, sending ash high into the atmosphere. NASA's Landsat 8 satellite captured the ash plume, which reached heights of up to 50,000 feet. The eruption led to temporary closures of eight airports and thousands of flight disruptions, though operations have since resumed.
Anak Krakatau occupies the sea between Java and Sumatra, having risen from the submerged caldera of the 1883 Krakatoa eruption in 1930. The island has experienced regular volcanic activity since that time.
During the recent event, ash plumes reached 50,000 feet to the west and 20,000 feet to the east. The volcano is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a 25,000-mile tectonic zone hosting roughly two-thirds of Earth's active volcanoes. A major 2019 eruption triggered a landslide and tsunami.
