Apple Watch Series 12 introduces revamped sensors and audio intelligence tools
The Apple Watch Series 12 features a re-architected sensing system with a ring of 12 LEDs and increased sampling rates for more accurate health readings. It also debuts an Audio Intelligence suite, including Siri Recap and Live Rewind, which Apple says does not listen to conversations. The hands-on notes that the new finishes and materials are novel, and the watch offers Readiness scores similar to competitors.
The new sensor array uses a circular arrangement of twelve LEDs, replacing the previous four-diamond layout, which increases skin contact area. This hardware change, combined with more frequent sampling, allows for heart rate variability readings every five minutes instead of every few hours, feeding into a new daily Readiness score.
The Audio Intelligence suite introduces Siri Recap and Live Rewind, with Apple explicitly stating these tools do not eavesdrop. Additionally, the companion Health app is receiving a significant redesign featuring Apple Intelligence summaries, though this update requires a compatible iPhone and will roll out later in the year.
The enhanced sensing and Readiness features could shift consumer expectations toward more proactive, continuous health management, potentially affecting how individuals interpret daily fatigue and wellness.
