Frontier Airlines to Launch First South American Flights to Colombia
Frontier Airlines announced new nonstop service from Orlando to Bogota, Medellin, and Cartagena, marking its first entry into South America. The routes, launching in December, fill a gap left by Spirit Airlines' collapse. Frontier expects strong demand for low-cost travel between Orlando and Colombia.
Frontier's inaugural South American service will connect Orlando to three Colombian cities. Medellin flights begin December 10th on a daily basis, followed by Bogota on December 14th with six weekly flights that increase to daily in March 2027. Cartagena service starts December 19th, operating weekly.
These routes were previously flown by Spirit Airlines before its shutdown. Frontier's CEO indicated the carrier will selectively absorb other abandoned Spirit markets over the next two years. This expansion coincides with Frontier's upcoming withdrawal from New York's JFK airport, signaling a strategic reallocation of its network.
The restoration of these routes could significantly benefit price-sensitive travelers, particularly Colombian expatriates and Florida residents seeking affordable visits to family or tourism. By filling Spirit's void, Frontier may stabilize low-cost competition on these corridors, potentially lowering fares compared to legacy carriers. However, the weekly Cartagena frequency and Frontier's cautious expansion strategy suggest a gradual recovery, which may limit immediate capacity growth for consumers.
