Windows 11's Cloud Rebuild lets users reinstall OS without USB media
Microsoft is rolling out Cloud Rebuild, a recovery feature that reinstalls Windows 11 from a fresh image downloaded via Windows Update. It works even when the existing installation is corrupt and doesn't require a USB drive or custom recovery image. The feature is available in the latest Insider Beta build.
The feature is currently available in Insider Beta Build 26220.9343, accessible through the Windows Recovery Environment. It simplifies connectivity by reusing existing Wi-Fi profiles, allowing the system to fetch the necessary installation files directly from Windows Update without manual network configuration.
Users must be aware that this process erases the entire system drive, including personal files and applications, so backups are essential. For managed enterprise devices, the fresh installation automatically reconnects to organizational management services, restoring assigned policies and applications after the rebuild.
This capability could substantially reduce recovery friction for both home users and IT departments facing boot failures. By eliminating the need for external media, it may lower technical support costs and shorten downtime. However, the mandatory data wipe could lead to accidental data loss for users who overlook backups. Its reliance on a stable internet connection might also limit effectiveness in isolated or poorly connected environments, though wider availability could eventually standardize this recovery method.
