Apple's A20 Pro chip sets new Geekbench single-core record, outpacing desktop CPUs

Apple's A20 Pro system-on-chip, used in the latest iPhones, achieved a Geekbench 7 single-core score of 4,006, surpassing the previous record and beating Intel's Core i9-14900KS by 32% and AMD's Ryzen 9 9950X3D by 26%. The 2nm chip also shows a 23.3% improvement over the A19 Pro in single-thread performance, though multi-thread scores still trail high-end desktop processors.
The A20 Pro's 2P+4E configuration reaches 4.93 GHz, up from the A19 Pro's 4.26 GHz. This clock increase, combined with the 2nm process, drives the 23.3% single-thread gain — Apple's largest year-over-year improvement in recent generations. It also beats Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5 by 31.5% in single-thread and 12.2% in multi-thread tests.
The A20 Pro's multi-thread score trails the 10-core XRing O3 by 2.7%, showing core count still matters for parallel workloads. Since these results come from an early submission, real-world performance may vary. Still, the chip's single-core dominance suggests Apple's efficiency-focused design now rivals desktop processors in specific benchmarks.
