Genetic susceptibility may increase hair loss risk from GLP-1 drugs

A study of genetic data found that men with a genetic predisposition to male-pattern baldness have a 7% higher risk of hair loss when taking GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic. This suggests hair loss may not be solely due to rapid weight loss but also a biological effect on hair follicles. The research was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
The study analyzed genetic variants tied to GLP1R activity, which reflects levels of GLP-1 receptor proteins, and cross-referenced them with genetic markers for androgenetic alopecia. The 7% elevated risk persisted even after controlling for hypertension, a known contributor to hair loss, and was not explained by insulin resistance or reduced testosterone.
Because male-pattern baldness has been studied far more extensively than female hair loss, the researchers could only establish a causal connection in men. The findings suggest that hair thinning reported by GLP-1 users may involve a direct biological effect on hair follicles rather than being solely a consequence of rapid weight loss.
This finding could help physicians identify male patients at elevated risk for hair loss before prescribing GLP-1 medications, allowing for informed discussions about potential side effects. For the millions of men using these drugs for diabetes or obesity, the 7% added risk may factor into treatment decisions, though the modest increase suggests most genetically susceptible users would still experience acceptable outcomes. Future genetic screening tools may emerge from this research, though broader studies including women would be needed to fully understand the scope.
