Global survey reveals deep divisions among physicists on fundamental questions

A survey of physicists worldwide found no majority support for the standard cosmological model or any leading theory of dark matter or quantum gravity. Only two questions received majority agreement, including that the Big Bang may not mark the beginning of time. Researchers say the results reflect the unsettled nature of fundamental physics.
The survey, led by Niayesh Afshordi of the University of Waterloo and Perimeter Institute, was conducted with Phil Harper and the American Physical Society's Physics Magazine. Among its findings, only 68% agreement on the Big Bang not necessarily marking time's beginning and 51% on cosmic inflation crossed majority thresholds. Dark matter responses fractured across multiple camps, with 21% favoring combined explanations, while quantum gravity questions saw string theory lead at just 19%.
The results arrive amid recent DESI observations suggesting dark energy may vary over time, a finding that would challenge the ΛCDM model's assumption of constant dark energy. This context helps explain why the standard cosmological model failed to secure majority support, reflecting a field actively reassessing its foundational assumptions rather than a community lacking expertise.
This survey could influence how the public perceives scientific consensus, potentially reinforcing skepticism about established theories if headlines emphasize disagreement. Funding agencies and policymakers may use these divisions to justify supporting diverse research approaches, which could accelerate breakthroughs.
