Broomcorn millet arrived in Europe earlier than thought, altering farming patterns

A study in Science Advances shows that broomcorn millet was consumed in southeastern Poland around 1590 BCE, over a century earlier than previously known. This hardy crop allowed Bronze Age communities to cultivate marginal lands with poorer soils and drier conditions. The adoption was gradual, occurring within small groups rather than through large-scale migration.
The research team combined isotope analyses of human remains with radiocarbon dating and genetic data to trace how millet entered local diets. Carbon and nitrogen isotopes revealed long-term dietary patterns, while oxygen and strontium isotopes indicated geological origins of food sources. Several early consumers had eaten traditional wheat and barley before adopting millet later in life, suggesting integration into existing foodways rather than replacement.
Broomcorn millet, first domesticated in Inner Mongolia, thrives in dry conditions and poor soils unsuited to conventional cereals. Its cultivation let Bronze Age communities farm previously marginal land, though adoption remained limited to certain individuals. Consumers and non-consumers shared similar genetic and archaeological backgrounds, with earliest consumers showing local strontium signatures, arguing against migration as the driver.
