Accelerated biological aging linked to rising early-onset cancer rates

Research suggests that people born in recent generations show signs of faster biological aging compared to earlier cohorts at the same age. This accelerated aging is associated with increased risk of cancers diagnosed before age 55, including lung, gastrointestinal, uterine, and colorectal cancers. The findings may help explain why cancer incidence is climbing among younger adults.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, compared biological age markers against chronological age across generations, finding that more recently born cohorts showed larger gaps between the two. This gap, termed biological age acceleration, was associated with elevated risk for several early-onset cancers, including lung, gastrointestinal, uterine, and colorectal varieties. Notably, the aging effect appeared organ-specific: biologically older immune tissue correlated with lung cancer risk, while older-appearing fat tissue linked to colorectal cancer.
Researchers at WashU Medicine, working through the Siteman Cancer Center and the international Cancer Grand Challenges initiative, suggest these aging measurements could eventually help clinicians identify younger patients at elevated risk, enabling earlier screening or preventive strategies tailored to individual biological profiles.
This research could reshape how cancer risk is assessed in younger adults, moving beyond family history and lifestyle questionnaires toward biological markers that capture cumulative bodily wear. If validated, such measurements may enable earlier screening for those most vulnerable, potentially catching tumors at more treatable stages. However, the findings also raise questions about what modern environmental factors—diet, stress, pollutants—are driving this accelerated aging, and whether interventions could slow the process.
