Dark chocolate with 90% cocoa yielded about 18 extra repetitions, while milk chocolate with 60% cocoa added roughly nine, compared to water.
Dark chocolate aroma also reduced hunger and increased fullness before exercise, while milk chocolate was rated more pleasant but didn't significantly alter appetite. The researchers propose that learned associations with food aromas may trigger brain anticipation of eating, which could influence motivation during physical activity.
This finding could offer a simple, non-invasive way for gym-goers and athletes to enhance training volume without added perceived effort. Fitness facilities may consider using food scents as a motivational aid, though the small sample size and focus on young men limit generalizability.
