Tom Petty and Heartbreakers' Early Years Chronicled in New Box Set
A five-LP box set titled 'Origins 1971-1978' will be released on November 6 to celebrate the band's 50th anniversary. It includes rarities, live recordings, and newly mixed versions of their first two albums, along with a standalone disc of unreleased tracks. A video for the unreleased song 'Parade of Loons' features actor Iain Armitage, and the band is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Awards.
The collection spans from Petty's pre-Heartbreakers outfit Mudcrutch through the band's 1976 formation and its first two studio albums, both presented in newly remixed form by engineer Ryan Ulyate. Beyond the music, the physical editions include an 88-page fanzine featuring liner notes from critics David Fricke and Bud Scoppa, plus track-by-track commentary from band members themselves.
The announcement coincides with the group receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Awards, where Chris Stapleton is slated to join surviving original members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair for an opening performance. The box set's "uber deluxe" configuration adds a Blu-ray and DVD capturing the band's 1978 BBC appearance on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
This release may deepen appreciation for Petty's pre-fame catalog among longtime fans while introducing younger listeners to his formative work through the actor-driven video and standalone rarities disc.
