Air Pollution Exposure Linked to Higher Suicide Risk in Meta-Analysis

A meta-analysis of 29 studies found that increased exposure to fine and coarse particulate matter was associated with higher risks of death by suicide, attempted suicide, and suicidal ideation. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 showed a particularly strong association. The researchers suggested that air pollution may cause chronic inflammation and neurotoxicity, affecting mood regulation.
The meta-analysis examined 29 studies and found that each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM2.5 or PM10 exposure correlated with elevated risks across all three suicide-related outcomes. Long-term PM2.5 exposure showed the strongest effect, with an odds ratio of 1.53. Extended nitrogen dioxide exposure also demonstrated a significant association with increased risk.
The researchers proposed that particulate matter may trigger chronic inflammation and neurotoxicity, potentially impairing brain function and stress resilience. A separate narrative review of 16 studies examined other pollutants and noise but found no significant associations. The authors emphasized that suicide is complex with no single explanation, and that environmental factors represent one piece of a broader picture alongside existing mental health support efforts.
This research could influence how public health officials and mental health professionals approach suicide prevention. If air pollution truly contributes to suicidal thoughts and behaviors, then urban planning, emissions regulations, and environmental policy may become relevant to mental health strategies. Vulnerable populations in heavily polluted areas could potentially benefit from targeted support. However, the observational nature of the data means causation remains unproven, and socioeconomic factors intertwined with pollution exposure complicate any direct interpretation.
