Memory retrieval actively rewrites the original event, a process known as reconsolidation. Classic experiments by Elizabeth Loftus showed that leading questions, such as using the word "smashed," could implant false details like broken glass. Even vivid "flashbulb" memories of major events are roughly 40% inaccurate, despite people feeling certain about them.
Accuracy depends on situational factors, including viewing distance, lighting, and cross-race identification. Recent work on intoxication suggests witnesses under the influence may report fewer details but remain accurate on what they do recall. Proper police questioning and unbiased lineups are critical, as poor procedures can contaminate the memory, turning it into unreliable evidence.
