Sony Pictures Television Bets on PS5's Engaged User Base for Free Ad-Supported Channel Launch

Sony introduced over 100 free ad-supported channels on PlayStation 5 last month, leveraging Sony Pictures Television's content library. The company's TV chief highlighted the console's 40-50 million highly engaged users as a key advantage for reaching audiences who might otherwise be gaming. The move aims to expand the reach of Sony's TV IP and associated advertising.
Sony launched “Live TV on PS5” last month, bundling over 100 free ad-supported channels directly into the console’s interface. The service draws entirely on Sony Pictures Television’s existing library, turning owned shows and films into a streaming hub without requiring a separate subscription. Keith Le Goy, Sony’s TV chief, pointed to the PS5’s 40–50 million active users as the core audience, describing them as “incredibly engaged” with the platform. That engagement, he argued, gives the company a direct route to viewers who might otherwise skip traditional TV entirely. The move also extends Sony’s advertising reach, letting the company sell ad space against its own content inside a gaming environment.
This launch could shift how entertainment companies view gaming consoles—not just as gaming devices but as primary distribution points for ad-supported TV. For viewers, it may blur the line between play and passive watching, offering free content without leaving the console. Advertisers could gain access to a younger, highly attentive demographic that traditional TV increasingly misses. However, it may also intensify competition for attention, potentially pulling users away from games or other streaming services. The long-term effect depends on whether PS5 owners embrace this hybrid model or treat it as a secondary, occasional feature.
