Brief exercise breaks improve memory and attention, review finds

A review of 25 randomized trials found that two-minute exercise sessions every hour can modestly boost working memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility. The exercises included walking, stretching, and stair climbing. The effect is immediate, according to researchers.
The review analyzed 25 randomized trials involving 1,115 participants, with average ages spanning 8 to 78. Exercises ranged from gentle chair stretches and treadmill walking to vigorous jumping jacks. The overall cognitive boost was small (Hedges' g = 0.24), but grew to a medium effect (0.51) when the routine continued for weeks, and was strongest (0.61) in school or workplace settings.
The immediate benefits likely stem from exercise-triggered release of dopamine and noradrenaline, which increases blood flow. Longer-term, this can enlarge the hippocampus and improve prefrontal cortex function. Notably, breaks spaced an hour apart slightly outperformed 30-minute intervals. This fits the "exercise snack" concept, which addresses the fact that 31% of adults miss WHO's weekly activity targets.
This research could influence how schools and offices structure their daily schedules, potentially embedding short movement breaks into lessons and work shifts. For the 31% of adults who struggle to meet activity guidelines, these findings may offer a practical, low-barrier entry point to improve focus and memory. However, the modest effect size suggests such breaks are a supplement, not a substitute, for broader lifestyle changes.
