Bilt and Amtrak Launch New Points Transfer Partnership
Bilt has added Amtrak Guest Rewards as its first rail transfer partner, allowing members to convert points at a 2:1 ratio. Transfers are made in 1,000-point increments and process almost instantly. While the value is lower than some other transfer partners, it still beats using Bilt points for rent or statement credits.
The new partnership gives Bilt members access to Amtrak's network of over 500 destinations across 46 states and parts of Canada, including the heavily traveled Northeast Corridor. Amtrak's redemption pricing is dynamic, typically tied to cash fares rather than a fixed award chart, meaning point values can fluctuate based on route and travel date. Transfers require a minimum of 1,000 Bilt points and must be made in that increment.
Bilt points transferred to Amtrak are valued at roughly 1.3 cents each, which is lower than the estimated 2.2 cents per point value when transferred to partners like World of Hyatt. However, this still exceeds the value of using points for rent or statement credits. Amtrak points expire after 24 months of inactivity, so transfers should be made only when booking travel.
This partnership could make rail travel more accessible to a younger demographic of renters who accumulate Bilt points, potentially shifting some short-haul travel from flights to trains. It may also encourage more domestic tourism along scenic routes. However, the relatively low transfer value means the impact is likely limited to those already planning Amtrak trips, rather than creating new demand. The instant transfer feature could increase spontaneous bookings, but the 24-month expiration policy may deter casual point hoarders.
