Ukraine is pressing for an unconditional ceasefire backed by 50 countries, but Moscow has not yet responded.
The New York meetings follow a Sept. 5 Kremlin session where Putin met US representatives, with Dmitriev and foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov also present. Discussion topics are expected to span economic cooperation, energy matters, and potential pathways toward settling the conflict. Dmitriev's trip comes amid parallel diplomatic tracks: Zelensky and Trump have already conferred at the UN General Assembly's 81st session, while Ukraine's Sept. 23 unconditional ceasefire proposal has drawn backing from 50 nations in a joint statement. Moscow has not formally responded to that proposal, though Lavrov has rejected a ceasefire during peace talks. The Kremlin continues seeking resumption of three-way talks involving Washington, with Peskov confirming expectations of another trilateral format.
This meeting could signal whether Washington and Moscow are moving toward substantive negotiations or merely maintaining communication channels.
